40W microprocessors run up to 2.3GHz

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has released server microprocessors claim to hit a new low in power consumption for the company as well as some at new and higher data rates. The chips come in the wake of the debut from archrival Intel Corp. of its highest performance server chips to date, the Xeon 5500 series.

AMD's EE series chips consume 40W maximum on typical workloads while running at data rates up to 2.3 GHz.

"Power seems to be a bigger criterion than just performance alone," said Brent Kerby, a senior product marketing manager in AMD's server division. "We are seeing more growth in more efficient processors rather than higher performance processors," he added.

Only about five percent of AMD's server CPU business is for its top tier chips running at up to 105W. The biggest slice of its business is in a second tier at 75W and what had been the low-end until today, a group of 55W chips.

The new AMD EE chips consume about 20 percent less idle power than the existing 55W parts. They also support an additional power state that can be used to limit the processor's overall power consumption or adjust to different combinations of frequency and voltage to reduce power draw.

Separately, AMD also is rolling out versions of its latest server chips running at higher frequencies. They include a 3.1GHz part at 105W, a 2.9GHz chip at 75W and a 2.5GHz chip at 55W. The 45nm chips are all available immediately.
