XC8102 line switch ICs

Torex Semiconductor has released the 2nd generation XC8102 series of low supply current line switch ICs. Available in the ultrasmall USP-4 package, as well as in standard SOT-25 and SSOT-24 versions, the new device does not require any external capacitors and so is suitable for space critical designs such as those in handheld, battery-powered applications.

Many key features on the new XC8102 device have been improved upon over the XC8101 series. Andy Scott, marketing manager for Torex Semiconductor in Europe, commented: "The second generation XC8102 series addresses a wider range of applicationswe've increased IOUT to 400mA from 200mA, lowered the VIN range to 1.2V minimum from 1.8V and lowered the on-resistance to 0.35? (VIN = 2.9V) from 0.75?."

The XC8102 series contains a current limit and protection circuit so these are not required externally unlike discrete circuit solutions where MOSFET and resistors are used. By connecting, for example, the XC8102's VIN pin to the output pin of a step-down DC/DC converter, such as the XC9235 from Torex, the line switcher can be used to provide a number of accurate output rails.

The XC8102's CE pin controls the ON/OFF for each switcher to deliver power as and when needed thereby optimizing efficiency and power consumption. During the switch into standby mode, the electric charge at the CL capacitor, if used, is discharged via the internal auto-discharge switch, ensuring that the VOUT pin drops down to ground quickly. The XC8102 series contains an over current protection with fold-back current circuitry which operates as over current protection and short circuit protection for the output pin.
