Vietnam is set to become one of the largest mobile markets in Asia, with an estimated 120 million subscribers by the end of 2014, on a par with Japan's current subscriber base, according to a VietNamNet Bridge report.

The report cited an analysis by Seeking Alpha claiming that telecoms firms in Vietnam are expected to add 53 million subscriptions over the next five years, making it a potential boom market for 3G equipment vendors.

If 3G services would be available by the end of this year, Vietnam would likely have about 43 million subscribers by 2014, or 36 percent of total users. The Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications has already awarded four 3G licenses to five operators this month.

The GSM Association has congratulated the Vietnamese Government on opening the door to a mobile broadband future. GSMA public policy officer Ricardo Tavares said the move opened a new era of high-speed Internet access in the country.
