In April 2004, the Intel High Definition Audio (Intel HD Audio) specification was released. Authored by Intel and other PC industry leaders, the specification primarily targeted PC audio and its sub components. The specification supports 2 channels to 8 channels of multiple audio formats such as Linear Pulse Code Modulation (LPCM) at a bit resolution up to 24bit and 192kHz sampling rate. The interface typically supports LPCM and compressed formats up to 3.0Mbit/s such as DTS HD, WMA and AC-3. This article provides an overview of the audio software stack, Intel HD Audio controller and codec, and its evolution over time to support the newest premium audio formats used on many Blu-ray discs.
