Taiwan is mulling loosening its restrictions on Taiwan semiconductor investment in China, a move that would boost economic ties with the mainland, according to an Associated Press report.

The report cited Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou as saying that the island was not excluding the possibility of allowing companies to set up 12-inch wafer fabs plants in China. Taiwan currently only allows eight-inch fabs in China to prevent transfer of more advanced technology to the mainland.

Ma, who took office 11 months ago, has been trying to improve trade ties with the mainland to boost Taiwan's economy, the report said. The president told visiting Applied Materials Chairman Michael Splinter that the government was studying the feasibility of the plan.

In addition, Taiwan's financial daily, Economic Daily News quoted unidentified sources as saying that the government plans to announce the decision to allow 12-inch wafer fabrication facility in China in July.
