Comment: Will LTX-Credence survive ATE arena?

Keeping the optimism
During my recent visit with LTX-Credence, Rich Yerganian, VP of corporate marketing and investor relations, provided other reasons why LTX-Credence will succeed in the market:

??Balance sheet is fixed: "The other guys now have big changes to make," Yerganian claimed.

??ATE business is slightly improving: "We are all seeing signs of improvement. We don't know if that's sustainable."

??Mixed-signal and power management play: The company has a high-end logic/SoC tester, but "we are putting more R&D dollars on other platforms," Yerganian said, such as analog, mixed-signal and power management. That segment is less crowded, and the company would mainly compete against archrival Teradyne Inc.

??Outsourcing model: "We're completely outsourced," which lowers overall costs.

??Mixed customer base: "Credence was strong at the [subcontractors level]. LTX was strong at the IDMs."

LTX-Credence wants to go for the gold in ATE. I'm sure it will be happy to just get a medal. Perhaps a bronze medal would be a moral victory.

Time will tell if its strategy will work. I fear that the company will fall out of the medal round. I can envision visiting the company four years from now for a briefing on another new strategy.

On second thought, another likely possibility is that I will write another article on the latest ATE merger, this time involving LTX-Credence. That could happen sooner than later. I like what the company has doneand the products are finebut I'm afraid the economy will not cooperate. Like many in the equipment sector, LTX-Credence may be the next victim in the shakeout wrought by the terrible economic downturn.
