A consortium of 30 China solar panel makers aims to set up a network of solar panel assembly sites across the United States. Centron Solar has set up a small sales office in Eugene, Oregon as the first step in its plans to penetrate the U.S. market, according to a story in Register-Guard newspaper.

Centron Solar will act as a U.S. sales agent for its members, assembling in the U.S. panels made by its members in China and then sold directly to installers rather than to distributors. The group hopes the approach lowers the costs of its panels to users.

Most of the solar panels made in China are currently sold in Europe, said a Centron Solar spokesman. The group has no plans to make panels in the U.S.

The group plans to formally announce its launch at InterSolar 2009 in San Francisco.
