Converter clocking tech extends to high speed data clocks (Part I)

Wireless infrastructure, broadband and instrumentation applications generally require very high-performance clocking circuits. The primary components being clocked in these systems are high-speed data converters. Several key performance metrics are required for the clock circuits in these systems such as low phase noise and jitter, accurate frequency translation, and jitter filtering capability. Many of the attributes embodied in high-performance converter clocking solutions can be extended into clocking solutions that serve the wired network. The need for interoperability and reliable synchronization throughout the wired network also results in certain distinct clocking system requirements.

This article compares the clocking technology requirements of these two application areas. The first part of this article discusses clocking technologies required for converter clock systems, while the second part covers clocking system requirements for synchronized high-speed data networks.
