Employ integrated solutions for motor driver applications

The use of stepper motors has become commonplace in a wide range of applications. They continue to be a solution of choice for designers who need to implement highly accurate positioning; their efficiency, high performance and reduced size make them increasingly attractive for equipment ranging from dosimetry pumps to actuators, valves and surveillance cameras. They are also finding more uses in dynamic applications such as positioning of vehicle headlights and stage lighting, and for their enhanced acceleration capabilities, in manufacturing equipment such as pick-and-place, and sewing and weaving machines.

Although most steppers are used in an open-loop mode, many modern designs use closed loop control techniques. These have the advantage of maintaining the link between the real position of the rotor and the expected position according to the electrical drive signals, which in turn allows faster motion, while guaranteeing accuracy.

To enable future innovation, designers will continue to require a blend of turnkey and multichip solutions, allowing them to solve complex problems in new applications when required, but also to implement quickly and cost-effectively when necessary. What seems certain is that the range of applications for stepper motors and complex "mechatronics" will continue to expand.
