Texas Instruments Inc. has introduced the TPS6507x family of single-chip, power management ICs for portable electronics. The new power management units (PMUs) implement all sequencing and default options to power leading processors, including TI's OMAP and DSPs.

The TPS65070 and TPS65073 devices result in a 50-percent smaller DC/DC implementation versus a discrete design by integrating three highly efficient, 2.25MHz, 1.5A DC/DC step-down converters. These support the core processor, memory and I/O voltages; two general purpose 200mA LDOs; white LED backlighting to support up to 5-inch LCD displays; I2C communications interface; 10bit ADC; touchscreen interface; and an integrated 1.5A linear battery charger.

For the TPS65070, reference designs are available for the OMAP-L1x, TMS320C6742, TMS320C6746 and TMS320C6748 devices. While for the TPS65073 and TPS650731, reference designs are available for the OMAP35x processors.

The TPS65070 and TPS65073 devices are available in volume production from TI and its authorized distributors. The devices come in a 6mm x 6mm x 0.4mm, 48-pin, leadless, thermally enhanced QFN package with a suggested resale price of $3.95 in 1,000-unit quantities. Samples, evaluation modules and application notes are available.
