USB host controller supports 10Mbit/s transfer speed

Elan Digital Systems has released what it claims to be the smallest off-the-shelf USB host controller chip, just 4mm x 4mm in a 36-pin QFN package.

The USBHC869 chip features power consumption of less than 10?W in standby. The chip was designed to provide an easy and cost-effective solution to designers who need to add one or more USB ports to virtually any 8- or 16bit processor systems.

A unique feature of the design is that it supports data transfer speeds of up to 10Mbps without the need for DMA support from the host processor which removes a major design headache in many systems.

The device supports 1.8-, 2.8- and 3.3V signaling. Potential cost-saving and design simplification is achieved via an internal PLL which allows the use of an external clock input such as the main system clock.

The USBHC869 is based upon the manufacturer's VMB5000 series devices which have already been widely adopted worldwide for mobile communications products and which incorporate elements of Elan's patented design. A development board and full documentation is available, including driver design information. Software development is also available direct from Elan Digital.
