High-speed optocoupler tips 3mA drive current

ACPL-M50L optocoupler

Avago Technologies has released the ACPL-M50L single-channel optocoupler that operates on approximately 80 percent less drive current than today's standard 1MBd digital optocouplers.

Available in a small outline-5 (SO-5) package size, the ACPL-M50L high-speed digital optocoupler supports a wide supply voltage range from 2.7V to 24V and is driven by low forward drive current (IF > 3mA) with a high current transfer ratio (CTR > 80 percent min.) to allow direct drive from a microcontroller without the need to add a buffer chip.

Separate connections for the photodiode bias and output transistor collector of the ACPL-M50L increases its speed up to a 100x over that of a conventional photo-transistor by reducing the base-collector capacitance. Additionally, the optocoupler operates over a wide temperature range from -40C to +105C. Key features include a 3mA drive current; open collector output; TTL compatibility; 15kV/?S high Common-Mode Rejection at Vcm = 1500V; low propagation delay of 1ms maximum; and worldwide safety approvals pending: IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5/UL 1577/CSA.

The ACPL-M50L is aimed at designers of communication interfaces, MCU system interfaces, switching power supplies, and digital isolation for A/D, D/A conversion applications.

Pricing for the ACPL-M50L starts at $0.75 in quantities of 2,500.
