The South Korean government is set to inject 58.4 billion won (about $50 million) into local semiconductor manufacturing equipment companies over the next three years, according to a Yonhap News Agency report that cited government officials as sources.

The project is expected to reduce reliance on overseas made equipment and foster the countries abilities in areas such as phase-change and resistive RAM, the report said. It runs until November 2012 and the government will provide 35.9 billion won (about $31 million), with companies including Samsung and Hynix providing the remainder.

The plan is targeting seven pieces of manufacturing equipment that Korea currently has to import and five future technologies for sub-30nm integrated circuits.

"The injection of state money will be made under the condition that Samsung and Hynix will buy finished products and technologies if they meet international standards," the report quoted Park Tae-sung, head of the semiconductor and display division at the Ministry of Industry and Knowledge Economy, as saying.

The spending could help Korea generate 1.2 trillion (about $1 billion) in manufacturing equipment sales in the five years from 2013 to 2017, the report said.
