A French newspaper reported that STMicroelectronics NV owns a registered trademark on "iPad," the same name Apple Inc. gave to the much-hyped tablet-style computer unveiled Jan. 28.

ST filed for a trademark on the iPad brand with the European Union in 2000, according to La Tribune.

ST filed for the IPAD trademark on Sept. 1, 2000, according to the website of the European Union's Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office. The application number is 001843937. The trademark is set to expire Sept. 1, 2010.

ST's Website states that "IPAD is a trademark of STMicroelectronics." ST uses IPAD as an acronym for Integrated Passive and Active Devices.

Although there is no technology correlation between ST's IPAD and Apple's iPad, ST told EE Times it is looking into the situation. However, the company declined to comment further.

Apple's 'iPad' tablet is described as a 10-inch touchscreen computer weighing about 1.5 pound. The device is "thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook" at one-half inch deep, Apple said. The iPad is expected to be available in late March, priced at $499 to $699.

The iPad has a 9.7-inch LCD screen and is powered by an Apple-designed SoC known as A4, Apple said. The company said the chip provides "exceptional processor and graphics performance" along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.
