Buzz: Micron eyes Numonyx takeover

Keywords:Micron Numonyx acquisition? NAND? NOR flash?

Rumors are swarming again that Micron Technology Inc. is considering buying Numonyx B.V.

Those rumors surfaced last year. Word on the street is that Micron is still seeking to enter the NOR flash market.

"I am hearing rumors that Micron maybe buying Numonyx. This deal would only make sense to give Micron a one stop memory source for wireless and all other applications, especially to satisfy Nokia," according to one analyst.

Strangely, for some time, Intel Corp. has been backing two flash ventures: Numonyx and IM Flash Technologies LLC. IM Flash is a joint NAND partnership between Intel and Micron.

Formed in 2008, Numonyx is the memory spin-off of Intel and STMicroelectronics. STMicroelectronics holds a 49 percent stake in Numonyx, Intel has 45 percent and Francisco Partners owns 6 percent. The new venture is selling NOR, NAND and phase-change memory, based on technology from Ovonyx Inc.
