From PLX Technology Inc. comes what it claims to be the highest-performance, lowest-power direct attached storage (DAS) controller for the consumer storage market.

The PLX OXUFS944SE silicon is highly integrated to reduce designers' overall cost and is complemented with application firmware that includes secure, real-time eSATA encryption and cutting-edge software that slashes OEMs' new product time to market.

The controller provides more than 80MBps write performance and up to a 100 percent performance increase on small block sizes over similar products in the market. PLX's eSATA performance provides up to an 80 percent boost on write.

The OXUFS944SE DAS controller bridges between an eSATA, FireWire or USB 2.0 interface to a single HDD and enables designers to create products with a minimal number of external components. The OXUFS944SE includes a flexible cipher engine providing real-time, on-the-fly eSATA encryption/decryption of data that adheres to the Advanced Encryption Standard, enabling deployment of full disk encryption solutions.

Low power of 391mW is achieved through a combination of PLX's chip architecture and advanced firmware solutions. The OXUFS944SE supports a number of power-saving modes, including serial ATA Interface Power Management (IPM), which allows additional power saving when connected to HDDs that also support IPM.

Pricing for the OXUFS944SE is $7 in volume quantities. Sampling with full production is scheduled for Q2 10.
