Coming off a bad 2009, Taiwan PC and LCD manufacturers have rebounded in Q1 10.

Taiwan's PC industry, the world's largest, saw revenues jump by 53 percent in Q1 10. Sales rebounded to NT$793.4 billion ($25.1 billion) from NT$519.2 billion ($16.53 billion) in the same period a year ago, based on revenue statements listed companies file to the Taiwan stock exchange authorities each month.

Acer Inc. had a big quarter. Asustek Computer had an 85 percent jump in revenues to NT$74.8 billion ($2.39 billion) during Q1. Compal led sales growth of the contract manufacturers in the first quarter with a 98 percent jump to NT$216.6 billion ($6.9 billion).

Meanwhile, Taiwan's LCD revenues jumped 125 percent to NT$273 billion ($8.7 billion) from NT$121 billion ($3.86 billion) in the same period a year ago, according to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council.

Taiwan is the world's second largest LCD maker. Hannstar Display Corp. led sales growth in Taiwan's LCD industry with a 158 percent jump in Q1 sales, according to the council.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes trailed Hannstar with a 139 percent increase in first quarter sales. Chimei Innolux Corp., which this year became Taiwan's largest LCD maker through the merger of Innolux Display Corp. and Chi Mei Optoelectronics, had a 124 percent gain in Q1 sales.

Prime View International makes most of the screens used in electronic book products such as the Kindle from Amazon, the world's largest online retalier, and the Reader from Japan consumer electronics maker Sony.

Prime View, the world's highest volume supplier of ePaper display modules, last year announced an agreement to acquire U.S.-based E Ink Corp., the leading supplier of electronic paper display materials and intellectual property, for approximately $215 million.
