How to choose system design methodologies (Part 1)

Most real modern embedded system designs are inherently complex, given that their functional specifications are rich and they must obey multiple other requirements on cost and performance. As a result, we need methodologies and frameworks to help guide our decisions when designing large systems.

The first part of a three-part series, this technical article aims to answer the following questions: Why systems design? Which system design methodologies are important? And what are the benefits that come to the embedded developer who uses them.

Part 2 looks at the requirements analysis, which captures informal descriptions of what a system, and techniques for more formally specifying system functionality, and how to turn such specifications into an architecture design. Part 3 covers the topic of QA, which must be considered throughout the design process to ensure a high-quality design.
