HS-CAN transceivers deliver improved EMC, ESD

TJA1043 CAN transceiver

NXP Semiconductors has unveiled the TJA1043 high speed-CAN (HS-CAN) transceiver with significantly improved EMC and ESD performance levels.

The HS-CAN transceiver solution provides power supply control for the entire node. Designed and developed in collaboration with key automotive OEMs and suppliers, the TJA1043 exhibits fail-safe features, network diagnostics and wake-up source recognition. Extending NXP's existing portfolio that includes the widely used TJA1040, TJA1050 and TJA1041A and the newly released TJA1042 and TJA1051, the new transceiver enables vehicle manufacturers to push down overall network costs while driving up system performance, quality and reliability.

With the electric system of a modern car getting increasingly complex, the automotive industry faces new challenges in lowering energy consumption. Built on the latest automotive OEM specifications, the TJA1043 provides a solution for the automotive manufacturers to control the electrical load. It exhibits very low electromagnetic emission, enabling reduced network ringing and allowing choke-less operations. The TJA1043 also has a very high EMI along and state of the art ESD protection. It has very low power consumption and demonstrates passive behavior when the supply voltage is turned off. These combined performance characteristics ensure that the vehicle operates as designed without being affected by its anticipated electromagnetic environment.

Complementing NXP's High Performance Mixed Signal strategy, the TJA1043 is designed for high-speed (up to 1Mbit/s) CAN applications in the automotive industry. Major enhancements include improved EMC and ESD performance, 24V support for truck applications, reduced quiescent current consumption.

The TJA1043 is suitable for 12V and 24V systems, with VIO input allowing for direct interface with 3V and 5V microcontrollers. In addition, the device features SPLIT voltage output for stabilizing the recessive bus level and listen-only mode for node diagnosis and failure containment.

Low-power management features include very low current standby and sleep modes, with local and remote wake-up. The transceiver also packs capability to power down the entire node while supporting local, remote and host wake-up as well as functional behavior predictable under all supply conditions.

The TJA1043 includes high ESD handling capability on the bus pins. Bus pins and VBAT are protected against transients in automotive environments. The device packs Transmit Data (TXD) dominant time-out function with diagnosis as well as undervoltage detection and recovery on pins VCC, VIO and VBAT.

Fully ISO 11898-2 and ISO 11898-5 compliant, the transceiver has been qualified to Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) standard Q100 and is suitable for use in automotive applications. The transceiver is housed in an environmentally friendly, RoHS-compliant package and does not contain any halogenated flame retardants (known as Dark Green).
