Hewlett-Packard Co. remains on top of the MEMS sensor market in 2009, leading semiconductor IDM and fabless firms with $877 million in MEMS revenue, according iSuppli Corp.

The top four players in MEMS in terms of revenue remained unchanged from 2008 to 2009, though most saw MEMS revenue decline in the turbulent year, according to iSuppli. MEMS revenue for the top 10 IDMs and fabless manufacturers amounted to $5.7 billion in 2009, down 8.8 percent from the year before.

Overall, HP's MEMS revenue declined by nearly 8 percent in 2009 compared with 2008, according to iSuppli. While sales of HP's inkjet printers fell 12 percent in 2009, the firm was able to cushion the blow through its large installed base, whose use of disposable printheads or replacement ink cartridges continued to provide significant revenues, according to Jrmie Bouchaud, principal analyst at iSuppli.

"More than half of Hewlett-Packards MEMS revenue is fabless, and the company outsources the fabrication of a large portion of its printheads to STMicroelectronics," Bouchaud said. "The seismic-grade accelerometers introduced by the company at the end of 2009 have not yet started contributing to its MEMS revenue, iSuppli research shows."

Meanwhile, No. 2 player Texas Instruments Inc. saw MEMS revenue decline to $586 million in 2009 from $630 million in 2008. TI benefited from the revenue that MEMS in pico projectors started to bring in during the year, according to Bouchaud.

IDMs accounted for roughly 77 percent of MEMS revenue in 2009, compared to 23 percent for fables manufacturers, iSuppli said. But outsourcing is set to increase during the next five years because of the growing trend in the industry to use external foundries for semiconductor production, according to the firm.
