Universal charging solutions to dampen power adapter market

The GSM Association for a Universal Charging Solution (UCS) initiative is expected to hit power adapter and charger shipments from 2015, according to the latest findings from IMS Research.

The solution, due to be introduced in January 2012, is supported by over 25 leading mobile operators and manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung, Orange, Vodafone AT&T and T Mobile. It aims to promote the re-use of chargers (in particular for mobile phones), reducing the number of redundant and duplicate chargers; in addition, the solution is also intended to reduce standby energy consumption of the charger.

"Over a billion mobile phones are shipped each year, each with a dedicated charger. If the UCS initiative drives manufacturers and operators to stop shipping chargers with their mobile phones, there will be an obvious impact on demand for chargers," Rinesh Vaja, an analyst in IMS Research's power and energy research group commented. "Whilst the impact won't be immediate as the solution is predicted to be rolled out in stages, IMS Research projects there will be a decline of 6 percent for total shipments of all power adapters and chargers in 2015, including a much more severe decline in shipments of mobile phone chargers."

While such a 'green' initiative will certainly be welcomed by most, it may cause a lot of pain for mobile phone charger manufacturers, which tend to specialize in power supplies for one particular application. In the longer term, the effect of a universal charging solution on other applications, which may adopt it, or be compatible with it, is still hard to predict accurately. IMS Research's report, "The World Market for External Power Adapters and Chargers," does however project healthy growth in other established markets such as notebook PCs and in emerging applications such as e-books, netbooks, and wireless power and charging.
