Keywords:wireless technology? Bluetooth? Wi-Fi? MIMO?

Before the opening of Computex 2010, numerous wireless technology vendors have announced plans to explore completely new markets in the consuming and entertainment arenas for Bluetooth V4.0 and Wi-Fi with 4x4 MIMO. The 2.4GHz non-compression wireless audio transmission technology, tailored for home cinema, also took the opportunity to come to the scene, aiming for the high-end home entertainment market.

Following the announcement of Bluetooth V4.0 specifications, Bluetooth SIG hopes to further expand applications beyond mobiles with the aid of low-energy technology in the new version of Bluetooth.

"In the first quarter of 2010, we emphasis on the series flow applications of Bluetooth music; in the second, we focus on extending the Bluetooth's applications in security and proximity communication. Subsequently, we shall proceed to extend Bluetooth into the areas of personal medical treatment and entertainment, like pacemakers, remote action control and home remote control etc," said Heidy Chow, senior members relationship manager of Bluetooth SIG.

The "Beyond Handset" initiative by Bluetooth SIG aims to get the wireless earphone out of people's fixed impressions for Bluetooth, Chow said.

For this goal, Bluetooth V4.0 has focused on the low-energy technology. "We have not only applied various RF architectures and frequency hopping methods for the low energy technology of new version Bluetooth, but even applied certain changes on fundamental architecture," according to Mike Lu, technical marketing manager of greater China region, Bluetooth SIG.

Lu noted that while traditional Bluetooth could only provide point-to-point services, the new Bluetooth with low energy consumption is more close to a network architecture; it can serial-connect with more facilities, providing wider range of application. "As great as two billion facilities with Bluetooth technology included around the globe shall be the basis, and also the established advantage for us to promote the application of Bluetooth in the consumption, entertainment, and even the smart grid fields."

Stronger Wi-Fi reception
While Bluetooth is currently trying to extend beyond mobile for consumer electronics, Wi-Fi, which has had years of cultivation in the home entertainment market, has not slowed its pace. Quantenna Communications has announced not long before that they have accomplished the development of 4x4 MIMO Wi-Fi chipsets. The cost of chipset is close to the present 3x3 MIMO Wi-Fi resolution, according to David French, CEO of Quantenna.
