LEDs promise improved heat dissipation, ESD protection

Lumex is rolling out new devices from its TitanBrite line of high-power LED technology in 2-, 3- and 5W capacities. The surface-mounted LEDs provide high intensity light of up to 58, 210 and 300 lumens respectively.

The company claims that compared to similar high-power LEDs, the new TitanBrite products can provide up to a 30 percent improvement in heat dissipation performance and a 60 percent enhancement in ESD protection. The new line features unique packaging that allows for simplified integration and for additional savings in the area of product design.

The new TitanBrite 2-, 3- and 5W LED technologies are designed for applications that require bright, intense light with low power consumption, and are compatible with standard LED drivers. Applications include: automotive, decorative, landscape, small space and emergency lighting, as well as backlighting and incandescent lamp replacement. Lumex offers complimentary technical support to help design engineers integrate the LEDs in the most efficient way for their unique application requirements.

The new TitanBrite LEDs can provide thermal resistance as low as 7C/W, compared to 10C/W for standard high power LEDs. The TitanBrite line provides 8,000V ESD protection compared to 5,000V for traditional high power LED technology.

The new LEDs also feature unique packaging that simplifies integration processes. Whereas traditional high-power LEDs require an additional heat sink or metal core PCB to control thermal dissipation, the packaging of the new TitanBrite products allows for the elimination of the metal core PCB and instead fuses to a lead frame to manage thermal output. This simplifies product design and reduces the number and cost of ancillary materials required to make the product perform.

The TitanBrite line comes with complimentary integration support. Lumex Technical Design Specialists can integrate TitanBrite LEDs with LCDs, light pipes, switches, connectors and other key components to create solutions that maximize performance and efficiency in each individual application.

The RoHS-compliant TitanBrite LEDs are available in a variety of colors. The 2W technology is available in yellow (591nm typ) and red (623nm typ). The 3- and 5W LEDs are offered in blue (465nm typ), warm white (2700K) and cool white (6000K) with red, green and yellow versions also available at no additional cost.

The compact size of the new LEDs enables real estate savings in product design. The 2W TitanBrite LED (SML-LXL8047XXX/2) is available in both a round 8mm package as well as a 9mm x 9mm package. The 3W TitanBrite LED (SML-LXL8047XXX/3) is available in a round package with 8mm diameter. The 5W TitanBrite LED (SML-LXL99XXX/5) features a 9mm x 9mm package with 7.70mm diameter. The square package of the 5W LED allows for increased design efficiency with easier assembly and array formation opportunities.

Lumex's new TitanBrite high power LEDs are list priced from $4.96 to $8.86 for the 2W LED, $4.73 to $8.96 for the 3W LED, and $10.83 to $19.88 for the 5W technology dependent on quantity ordered. Lead times range from six to eight weeks.

With the expansion of its TitanBrite line, Lumex now provides over 10 different high-power LED technologies including 1-, 2-, 3- and 5W sizes, through-hole and SMT offerings as well as standard and RGB formats.
