FO short link transmitter/receiver optimizes isolation

In power generating wind and solar farms, fiber optics technology is widely considered the preferred isolation technology to interface between low voltage control logic or microprocessors and high voltage power inverters and switching circuits. The fiber optic (FO) short link transmitter/receiver launched by Avago Technologies is suited for isolating frequency inverter and power converter applications common in such renewable energy installations.

The 10MBd HFBR-3810Z FO short link transmitter/receiver offers pin-to-pin distance of 24.96mm, providing transient voltage suppression of 12kV, in accordance with IEC 60664-1. Avago's FO short link technology allows galvanic isolation on one PCB, where previously isolation was achieved by separate transmitter/receiver pairs on two PCBs linked by plastic optical fiber. Thus, the HFBR-3810Z allows much more compact designs.

FO short link devices also have have creepage and clearance specifications greater than existing optocoupler devices and offer superior galvanic isolation than transformer-based technology. And fiber technology has excellent EMI resistance and EMC characteristics. The Avago HFBR-3810Z short link transmitter/receiver operates reliably in high noise environments common in high voltage switching and motor control equipment and systems. The DC coupled data link does not require data encoding or digitizing circuitry. The FO receiver has a CMOS/TTL output for easy interface design.

Other features of the HFBR-3810Z include proven 650nm fiber optics technology; high speed DC to 10MBaud; compact assembly, with 13mm x 33.56mm dimensions for a PCB footprint of only 4.36cm?; availability of a metal shield version, the HFBR-3810MSZ; operation at the extended temperature range of -40C to +85C; and RoHS compliance.
