Tuner ICs suit worldwide broadcast systems

Sony Corp. begins shipping samples of its silicon tuner modules, which incorporate Sony's silicon turner IC that conform to worldwide broadcast systems. The line of 40 small, high-performance silicon tuner modules that incorporate Sony's proprietary RF circuit technology is the company's response to the market's transition from coil to silicon tuners.

To meet customers' various demands, Sony has developed different types of silicon tuner modules including antenna switch models, loop-through function,demodulator models for digital broadcasts, and dual tuner models. By using these modules, LCD TV and video recording equipment manufacturers can improve production efficiency while being assured of superior performance. They can reduce the number of necessary components as well as implement common global design for both hardware and software. Sony's silicon tuner modules are also eco-friendly with 40 percent less power consumption than Sony's conventional coil tuner and a standby mode. They are also immediately compatible with new broadcast systems such as, DVB-T2.

The tuners are 40 percent smaller compared to conventional coil tuners, contributing to smaller PCBs in the final products. They are designed to withstand ingress noise from peripheral circuits because they use Sony's proprietary RF circuit and simulation technologies. Also, spontaneous-emission noise can be minimized, which simplifies product development.

They offer stable reception performance which is achieved by excluding the air-core coil. Doing so minimizes the variations caused by reception channels and by the usage environment (ex. ambient temperature). The performance variation of each product is minimized relative to conventional coil tuners.

The silicon tuner modules use 50mW in standby mode and contribute to low power consumption for final products.
