The China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced on July 20 that the country had 25.2 million 3G mobile wireless technology users by the end of June 2010, reports said. While this is an increase from 18.08 million users at the end of March, it is below the government's target of reaching 150 million users by 2011.

Problems with network coverage and handset supply were cited for the poor growth. The failure of the carriers' service plans to attract strong demand was also noted. About these challenges, Zhang Feng, director of the ministry's telecom-development department was quoted as saying "But we believe those three factors can be properly addressed."

China's three biggest 3G service providers are China Mobile, with a reported subscriber base of 10.46 million 3G users at the end of June; China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd with 7.56 million 3G users, and China Telecom Corp., with an estimated 7.18 million 3G users.

Zhang was also reported to have said that investment in China's 3G networks in 1H 10 was $2.83 billion, following last year's total of about $23.72 billion. By the end of the year, total investment is seen at about $14 billion, according to Zhang, reports said.
