A supplier of high-voltage ICs for energy-efficient power conversion, Power Integrations has made available two new reference designs for standby power supplies that achieve more than 90 percent full-load efficiency, meeting the 80 PLUS Gold or Silver PC specifications, EuP Lot 6 standby rules, and the new California requirements for TV power usage.

The reference designs use the company's TOPSwitch-JX IC product family. These devices feature multimode control, minimize power wasted in standby and delivering maximum efficiency over a wide range of operating loads.

The DER-246 general-purpose evaluation platform describes a PC standby power supply based on TOPSwitch-JX TOP265EG that operates from 110 VDC to 400 VDC input and provides >91 percent efficiency at 12V, 15W. DER-247, based on TOPSwitch-JX TOP264EG, describes a supply for a similar application operating from 110VDC to 400VDC input and providing >87 percent efficiency at 5V, 10W. For TV and other consumer products, the designs make 20mW available to the load for just 100mW of input power.

"More and more power supply designs require very good light-load efficiency performance and, with PC power supplies moving to the 80 PLUS Silver and Gold specifications, the PC-standby portion of the design needs to be exceptionally efficient all the way from light load to full load. The innovative control technique and power MOSFET technology of TOPSwitch-JX allow it to deliver the performance needed for 80 PLUS Gold designs, saving component cost in other portions of the PC power supply, said David New, product marketing manager at Power Integrations.

TOPSwitch-JX is an integrated family of 16 power conversion ICs incorporating a 725V power MOSFET for use in flyback power supplies. The novel TOPSwitch-JX multimode control algorithm maximizes power efficiency across the entire load range. High efficiency at full power minimizes power wasted during normal operation and reduces the complexity and expense of thermal management on the system. At low power levels, high efficiency enables adapters with extremely low no-load consumption and maximizes power available to the system in standby mode for applications constrained by standards and regulatory controls.

Along with the new reference designs, the TOPSwitch-JX introductory video and product datasheet are available now on the Power Integrations website.
