Asia-Pacific GSM subscriptions exceed 2 billion

The number of GSM subscriptions (including WCDMA-HSPA) reached significant milestones in Q2 2010 according to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA). According to the association, world market share of GSM subscriptions now stands at almost 90 percent of all mobile technologies. In the Asia Pacific region, the number of subscriptions has exceeded the 2 billion milestone.

GSA also reported that China's GSM penetration has passed 700 million while India has exceeded 500 million. Central and Latin America and the Caribbean region has also passed the 500 million mark.

GSA's Market Update delivers key facts and trends regarding mobile services, network evolution, operator commitments, deployments, service launches and the supporting eco-systems. The featured technologies include GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA-HSPA+, and LTE. Furthermore, the availability of spectrum for mobile services including mobile broadband is explained, also including progress on re-farming initiatives (900MHz, 1800MHz) and the release of new bands C digital dividend and 2.6GHz spectrum.
