Synopsys Inc. has initiated the creation of the DesignWare USB Software Alliance Program in a bid to ensure USB connectivity with designers' system-on-chips (SoC). Jungo, emsys, MCCI and MicroDigital are the first members of the alliance, which hopes to create drivers, firmware and stacks compatible with Synopsys' DesignWare USB 2.0 and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 IP with the end result of allowing plug-and-play for users of PCs, computer peripherals, mobile devices, and consumer electronic products.

The alliance members were chosen for their wide range of products to allow SoC designers to select the best software vendor for the development of their USB-based designs. They also help designers gain certification from the USB Implementer Forum by providing customized development kits, services, and global support. The alliance is expected to facilitate the development of USB-based designs and to allow engineers to shift the bulk of their workload from driver and firmware development to product differentiation.

emsys Embedded Systems GmbH CEO Karsten Pahnke welcomed the creation of the alliance. "Proven interoperable solutions help our mutual customers significantly speed their software and product development time," he said. Jungo general manager Ophir Herbert also praised the development, saying it "enables us to conduct thorough interoperability testing of our USB protocol software stack."

John Koeter, vice-president of marketing for Synopsys' Solutions Group, said the effort will help "bring high-quality products to the market faster and with significantly less risk."
