The automotive electronic products market is projected to continue to grow over the coming years, according to a report from Databeans Inc. The report, titled "2010 Automotive Microcontrollers," indicates that the global market revenue for all automotive semiconductors is expected to swell 27 percent to $21 billion in 2010.

The automotive microcontroller market alone is expected to reach $7 billion by 2015. The automotive industry will continue as the second-largest buyer for the $13.4 billion microcontroller market, just behind industrial and IC cards, with average annual growth of 8 percent, according to the Databeans report.

Microcontroller-based engine control units (ECUs) leads the growth in automotive IC content. ECUs, which control such features as antilock brakes, stability control and backup warning systems, can number between 25 and 35 per car and as many as 70 in luxury vehicles today. However, the number of ECUs cannot increase without limit as it impacts on the overall cost.

IMS notes that automotive electronic products already account for a quarter of an automobile's cost and the figure may rise to 50 percent.
