Qualcomm Inc., keen to develop new mobile services, has launched an incubation lab of its own. Qualcomm Services Labs Inc. (QSL) is a wholly owned subsidiary that will develop new mobile services and applications in five areas: communication, information/entertainment, discovery, life automation, digital to physical.

Qualcomm will review the incubation lab's projects and determine whether they will be transferred to a new or existing division or whether they will be spun off as a separate business entity. QSL general manager Isaac Babbs said that as mobile devices' and high-speed networks' capabilities grow and enrich people's lives, the lab will "help fast-track these new capabilities."

QSL has already launched four new mobile services: Neer, a location-sharing service targeting small groups of people such as families and friends; Qilroy, a social-messaging service featuring peer-to-place communication; Tapioca, a URL shortening services for sharing of multimedia content across smartphones, feature phones, PCs, and notebooks; and Vive, a free, friends-based social recommendation service. Neer is now available on the Android Market and soon in Apple's App Store and Brew MP while Qilroy has launched on Apple's App Story and will soon be available on Brew MP and Android Market. Vive is now available as a Facebook application and will soon be on iPhones and Android mobile phones.
