The cable set-top box (STB) industry still offers room for solid growth despite a slowdown in shipments, according In-Stat. The research firm's studies indicate that while 2009 saw the market set a new record for global unit shipments, the number actually fell compared to 2008. 2010 is poised to become the first year of negative growth since 2002 but regional markets offer hope for manufacturers.

Digital STB unit shipments worldwide are forecast to hit 44.1 million in 2010, an 8 percent fall from 2009. Around $2.8 billion worth of semiconductor components went into cable STB products in 2009, just slightly higher than in 2008. Motorola, Cisco Systems, and Technicolor (formerly Thomson) were the top three manufacturers in terms of units shipped but their combined shipments fell 9 percentage points to 41 percent of total worldwide unit shipments.

Despite the softening market, some regional markets are expected to see growth shipments, according to In-Stat. These include Europe, where there is a growing demand for HD cable STBs, and Latin American where governments are shifting from analog to digital cable TV.

The In-Stat study offers more information on digital cable STB bill of materials forecast, regional breakdown of the worldwide unit shipment and revenue forecasts until 2014, and market and technology trends, among others.
