MIMO test simulates varying radio patterns

ETS-Lindgren launches a test system for multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) operational transconductance amplifiers (OTA). The Model AMS-8700 RF environment simulator allows repeatable measurement of radiated performance of wireless devices in a simulated multi-path environment. It is suited for the evaluation of downlink MIMO performance of emerging wireless technologies including LTE, WiMAX, IEEE 802.11n, and Wi-Fi.

It is also useful for testing the receive diversity performance of existing wireless technologies. The patent pending system consists of a dual polarized antenna array in an absorber lined fully-anechoic chamber connected to technology specific communication test equipment through a spatial channel emulator.

�We designed this MIMO OTA test system to simulate a wide range of real-world RF environments,? explained Michael Foegelle, director of technology development for ETS-Lindgren. �Traditional OTA tests use antenna pattern measurement techniques in an anechoic environment, under the assumption that wireless devices transmit and receive with a static radiation pattern. However, modern wireless devices can vary their radiation pattern as a function of the environment making performance evaluation difficult. MIMO performance is a function of the transmitter, receiver, and the RF environment in between."

The Model AMS-8700 provides a simple, reliable solution to a complex test allowing wireless device manufacturers to easily verify the performance of their products and be confident when a product goes to market. This solution offers engineers the flexibility to test different product designs in house to quickly evaluate tradeoffs in cost versus performance of a wireless device.

Other features of Model AMS-8700 include the capability to support single cluster, multiple cluster, and uniform models as well as variable angles of arrival, Doppler, and delay spreads to emulate the scattering effect of fixed and moving objects within the simulated environment.

The standard system configuration includes the RF shielded chamber and high performance anechoic absorber test environment as well as measurement equipment such as antennas and MIMO antenna structure, power amplifier, multiple access positioning system with laptop mount kit, free space mount kit for mobile phone testing, five beam laser and CTIA Ripple Calibration Antenna and RF-Cable Kits. Several optional accessories are also available including a 16-antenna array upgrade, SAM mounting kits, and precision sleeve dipoles, to name a few. With every Model AMS-8700, ETS-Lindgren provides a shielding verification test report, integration and initial calibration of the test system components and training of the customer�s lab personnel on performing MIMO testing.
