VMware's vSphere now supports Broadcom Corporation's 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) iSCSI/1GbE iSCSI host bus adapter (HBA) and boot solution. To be unveiled this week at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco, the "in box" iSCSI HBA solution promises "twice the input/output operations per second (IOPs), twice the bandwidth and twice the CPU effectiveness when compared to network interface cards (NICs) without iSCSI HBA capabilities."

Broadcom said the solution, which will be demonstrated using the NetXtreme II 10GbE converged network interface controller (C-NIC), frees up resources as it provides complete on-chip processing of iSCSI traffic and allows the creation of more virtual machines (VM) on the vSphere 4.1 platform. The 1GbE C-NIC and the BCM57712 10GbE C-NIC, which supports SR-IOV technology to speed up networking traffic by directly connecting physical hardware to VMs, both feature the iSCSI HBA and iSCSI boot functionality.

Server virtualization and the growth of networking traffic has led to soaring sales in the 10GbE server market. To reduce the load on the server CPU and allow greater scalability and performance, iSCSI HBA and networking virtualization technologies are used to speed up storage and networking traffic. Broadcom said its 10GbE C-NIC with iSCSI HBA functionality delivers "an unprecedented industry-leading performance of over one million IOPs."
