A new IMS Research study indicates that the automotive sensors market is set for a rapid recovery after being on a slide between 2007 and 2009. The report, titled "The World Market for Automotive Sensors," states that the sector could see 10 percent annual growth over the next eight years.

The tightening of emissions rules and fuel economy standards is helping spur the demand for automotive sensors such as exhaust-gas temperature sensors. Demand for gyros, low-g accelerometers and steering angle sensors is also on the rise due to legislation on the use of electronic stability control. Shipments of steering angle sensors could grow by an average of more than 12 percent per year, the report added.

The report also indicates that motorists are also fueling the growth of the sensors sector as they enjoy the comfort and convenience offered by applications such as position sensors for hard-top electric roof systems and air sensors for in-vehicle air quality systems. Unit shipments of air quality sensors are expected to more than quadruple over the next eight years.

Nevertheless, the report cautions that suppliers will continue to see intense competition as well as declines in demand for some types of sensors.
