Annual shipments of femtocells and enterprise femtocells will see significant increases in five years, according to a report by In-Stat. The report indicates that while the emerging compact base station market will see overall growth, the femtocell and femtocell categories will see the biggest increaseup to 31.8 million units by 2014.

In the report, titled "Small Cells Will Play a Very Large Part in Next-Generation Networks: Worldwide Femto, Pico, and Microcell Market Analysis," In-Stat states that the global annual enterprise femtocell revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) will hit 125.7 percent in the 2009 to 2014 period. Metropolitan picocell (carrier installed) unit forecast CAGR, meanwhile, is foreseen to reach 378% in the same period, hitting "several millions" by 2014. A slower CAGR of 14.2 percent is forecast for microcell base stations.

In-Stat principal analyst Allen Nogee said that the enterprise femtocell market is enjoying and will continue to enjoy strong growth "because they allow better in-home cell coverage, which has been especially lacking in the US." "Enterprise femtocells may even save businesses money," he added. "If PBX features are incorporated into enterprise femtocells, they could displace many wireless PBX and IP PBX installs, as well as the purchase of wireline phones."
