IDT supplies VRMs for fastest supercomputer

Integrated Device Technology Inc. (IDT) announced that it supplied voltage regulator modules (VRMs) to Silicon Graphics I to power Altix UV, the world's current fastest supercomputer. Altix UV utilizes the IDT Power VRMs for microprocessor, ASIC and memory power requirements. Since Altix UV's introduction in January 2003, IDT has been providing power solutions for SGI servers since the Altix system. The VRMs chosen by SGI makes use of the IDT-patented coupled inductor technology to enhance performance and lower power consumption in computing applications.

Each Altix UV server blade harvests energy from nine high-density IDT VRMs to enable very rapid transient response, tight regulation, efficiency, and reliability. The IDT low-voltage, high-current converters combines multi-patented IDT coupled inductor technology and advanced thermal design, resulting in remarkable efficiencies and modules with no heat sinks.

VP and general manager of the Analog and Power Division at IDT, Arman Naghavi says, "IDT took a system-level approach to reduce power loss and applied our product innovation engine to the power efficiency issue within computing and consumer platforms. Our complete power management solutions, featuring coupled inductor technology and VR controllers, give tremendous flexibility to our customers."

SGI's VP of product marketing, Bill Mannel says, "Altix UV gives our customers the ability to perform very large simulations and analyze tremendous amounts of data that were previously only imagined." He explains that the innovative VRM power solutions support the architecture of SGI Altix UV, which scales to thousands of cores in a single system image environment, giving great flexibility to users of Altix UV while running a wide range of applications.

SGI Altix UV is a pioneering system that has been created for fast, open and scalable computing. With Intel Xeon 7500 series processors, the SGI Altix UV scales to 2,048 cores and 16TB of memory, essentially making it the most scalable shared memory supercomputer currently available in the market.
