Dassault Systemes has unveiled a 3D model viewer for the Apple iPad to help users view and interact with high-quality models on the 3DVIA website.

The 3DVIA Mobile HD iPad application is an updated version of the 3DVIA iPhone app made to fit the iPad's bigger screen and higher resolution. It gives users of 3D modeling software packages access to and allows them to share their work on the iPad, which is powered by an Apple A4 system on a chipa Cortex-A8 CPU core paired with a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU. Users only need to create a free 3DVia account, upload 3D models to the site and use 3DVIA Mobile HD to show the models on the iPad.

More than 30 formats, including 3DXML, .dae (COLLADA), .3ds, .obj, IGES, STEP and .kmz, are supported. Making things easier is that some modeling applications from Dassault Systemes, including 3DVIA Composer, SolidWorks and CATIA, can publish directly to

Using finger swipes, users can pan, zoom and inspect models on the 3D viewer. They can also search, download and view over 20,000 3D models on as well as save, e-mail, or export 2D renderings to Facebook and upload 3D models to a private account. Users can also use the application to rate 3D models and interact with the community.

Lynne Wilson, chief executive officer of 3DVIA, said the success of the 3DVIA IPhone app showed that "users value instant access to high-quality 3D content on mobile devices." "3DVIA Mobile HD is an even better way to share rich product information with customers, prospects and partners. It delivers interactive 3D to your fingertips, and demonstrates the iPad's potential as a business communication tool and platform," she added.

3DVIA Mobile HD costs $1.99 on the App Store for a limited time, after which it will be available for $4.99.
