Integrated power management solution for Oak Trail devices unveiled

Maxim Integrated Products has rolled out a two-chip power-management solution for the upcoming Intel Atom processor-based "Oak Trail" platform that it says is ideal for next-generation tablets and netbooks and reduces time to market.

The solution integrates all of the circuitry needed for managing power delivery and battery charging, according to Maxim. It combines a MAX8958 power-management IC (PMIC) with the MAX17085B battery-charger and system-power IC.

The MAX8958, in a 5.4mm x 5.7mm x 0.4mm (pitch) wafer-level package (WLP), consists of two Quick-PWM (pulse-width modulator) VID controller supplies, three high-efficiency step-down converters, 13 LDOs, an RTC with alarms, processor platform sideband signals, a clock output for communications modules, a backup battery charger, and an SPI interface for programming. The MAX17085B has a multichemistry battery charger, dual fixed-output Quick-PWM step-down controllers, and dual keep-alive linear regulators in a 5mm x 5mm TQFN package.
