Xilinx demos how Intel QPI integrates FPGAs

Xilinx Inc. has demonstrated how the Intel QuickPath Interconnect (Intel QPI) technology can be used to integrate its FPGAs in high-performance computing applications. At the Intel Developer Forum, Xilinx showed that how high-performance Virtex FPGAs can support the low latency and memory coherency benefits of Intel QPI when paired with Intel Xeon processors in HPC systems.

"The tremendous processing horsepower in Xilinx FPGAs has enabled its increased usage in Accelerator and Offload Engine applications," said Amit Dhir, senior director of Aerospace, Defense and High-Performance Computing at Xilinx. "This coupled with their traditional strength in chip interfacing, given our flexible serial and parallel IO technology, allows Xilinx to support a broad range of acceleration architectures.

He added that the Intel QPI technology allows FPGAs' processing power to be harnessed and to make possible advanced accelerator subsystems in next-generation HPC systems.

Allan Cantle, president and founder of Nallatech, said the FPGAs can "significantly improve performance per watt per dollar."
