In-Stat Research reports that wireless backhaul expenditures will grow 41 percent to $117 billion by 2014 compared to 2009.

By 2014, Ethernet will be the dominant carrier technology, accounting for 85 percent of base stations, says the research firm. Millimeter microwave radios will account for $874 million in expenditures by 2014, compared to just $159 million in 2009 while more than half of the network capacity in North American last mile backhaul will be dedicated to LTE in the next five years.

In Western Europe, wireless last mile backhaul capacity will more than triple to nearly 60,000 Gb/s by 2014. The migration to LTE may, however, be slowed down by broadband caps.
