Research firm reports drop in July semiconductor chip sales indicator

A leading indicator of semiconductor chip sales in the Asia-Pacific fell 4 percent in July, according to a new report from The economic research firm's Asia-Pacific Semiconductor Chip Sales leading indicator showed a reading of 348.6 in July after a 2.5 percent drop in June. The forward-looking index sets an average of 100 in 2000.

"The Asia-Pacific region semiconductor leading indicator suffered a huge setback this month, with a major monthly decrease. Also, the six-month growth rate has plummeted, signs that the industry will decline later this year," Dr. Evangelos Simos, chief economist of, said. The six-month growth rate was up 16.3 percent in July 2010, after rising 37.9 percent in June.

The Asia Pacific Demand Prospects, 10-Country Leading Index and the Monetary Conditions, US Yield Curve, two of the six components that make up the leading indicator for semiconductor sales in the Asia-Pacific region improved in July.

The restNew Orders for Computers & Electronics, US Manufacturers; North America Demand Outlook, NAFTA Composite Leading Index; EU (Germany, UK & France) Demand Outlook, Composite Leading Index and Japanese Demand Outlook, Leading Diffusion Indexcontributed negatively to the indicator.
