High-speed Ethernet optical transceivers unwrapped

The industry has been given a sneak peek into the future of high-speed Ethernet with demonstrations of 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s solutions. Opnext and Anritsu displayed the world's first 100GBASE-LR4 module capable of an OTU4 transmission rate of 111.8Gb/s at the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) in Turin, Italy. They also demonstrated a 40GBASE-LR4 transceiver capable of running OTU3 traffic.

Opnext said its TRC5E20FNF-SF000 is a hot-swappable CFP optical transceiver module adhering to CFP MSA standards. It supports 100GBASE LR4 and OTU4 rates using Opnext cutting-edge EA-DFB lasers each running up to 28Gb/s.

The module, which is now available for sampling, transmits and receives via four parallel wavelengths at 25Gb/s each per the IEEE 802.3ba 100GbE and at 28Gb/s each per ITU-T OTU4 projects.

The Opnext TRC5B20MN-SW000 CFP optical transceiver uses 4 uncooled direct modulated DFB lasers running at up to 11.3Gb/s each to transmit 40GbE and SONET/OTU3e traffic. The module also conforms to applicable standards.
