In-car entertainment systems no longer need be interrupted when the driver starts or stops the engine, thanks to a new generation of audio amplifiers from STMicroelectronics. The company has unveiled the TDA7850LV, a 4x50W audio power amplifier said to be the very first start/stop-compatible IC.

While car manufacturers are now fitting high-efficiency engine management programs that turn off the engine when the car is stopped to save energy, such systems create distortion in the vehicle's internal audio system.

ST said the TDA7850LV audio power amplifier features start/stop compatibility and high audio performance. It also features ST's Flexiwatt power package car audio ICs and comes in various configurations are available such as vertically or horizontally mounted packages. A new surface-mount variant is also available.

Key features include 4x50W MOSFET output stage, 2? output driver compatible with diverse speaker types, hi-fi class distortion and low output noise, integrated 0.35A high-side driver supporting functions such as antenna control and protection against common vehicle electrical hazards.

The TDA7850LV is priced at $5.30 per unit for orders of 1,000 pieces.
