Personal navigation devices (PNDs) remain the most widely used navigation system form factor in countries surveyed by ABI Research for a new study. However, the study notes the French's preference for mobile phones with navigation software and the Germans' use of in-dash systems.

ABI Research reported that 85 percent of Americans surveyed prefer PNDs while 45 percent of the French use navigation-enabled mobile phones and 39 percent of Germans use in-dash systems.

Telematics practice director Dominique Bonte said Germans' preference for in-dash systems may be due to the fact that the systems are built into the vehicles, most of which are luxury cars. In France, drivers have already shifted to mobile phones as the carriers have been offering navigation solutions on phones for years.

Other findings include: text-to-speech is more common in Germany and the United States; 51 percent of German respondents use traffic information; TomTom is the leader in navigation solutions in Europe; about half of US, UK, and German users paid between $100 and $200 for their PND; and 55 percent of American respondents plan to replace their devices with a PND while 25 percent intend to buy an in-dash system.
