All-weather data acquisition modules support SMC, PCIe

Pentek Inc.'s Cobalt data acquisition module line has gained eight new members offering key software radio functions and a sampling frequency of up to 1GHz. The new boards, which also use Xilinx's Virtex-6 FPGAs for onboard signal processing, consist of four XMC and four PCI Express (PCIe) modules, which means all Cobalt boards are now available in both formats.

The XMC-format boards make up the 71xxx series and are designed for applications that necessitate a wide range of temperature options such as an unmanned aerial vehicle collecting radar and signal intelligence data. The 78xxx boards, using the PCIe format, are meant for desktop PCs and blade servers for R&D and laboratory environments.

 71xxx series data acquisition module

The four modules, each available in two formats, consist of the following: 71621/78621 - three 16-bit, 200MHz A/Ds, three multiband DDCs (digital downconverters), two 16-bit 800MHz D/As with DUC (digital upconverter) and interpolator; 71630/78630 - one 12-bit, 1GHz A/D and one 16-bit 1GHz D/A; 71650/78650 - two 12-bit, 500MHz A/Ds and two 16-bit, 800MHz D/As with DUC; and 71661/78661 - four 16-bit, 200MHz A/Ds and four multiband DDCs.

They all feature a Xilinx Virtex-6 LXT or SXT FPGA fully connected to all data and control paths. The FPGAs come with data multiplexing, channel selection, data packing, gating, triggering, time stamping,, memory control and other functions, as well as room for user-defined ones. The modules support a number of Virtex-6 devices to give users a wide choice of device density to use. Other key features include: synch bus for synchronizing multiple modules to increase channel count, VCO sample clock synthesizers locked to an external system reference, PCIe (Gen 2) interfaces for x4 and x8, secondary gigabit serial interface, and modular memory options for QDRII+ SRAM and DDR3 SDRAM intelligent, chaining DMA engines.
