LED driver dynamically adjusts supply voltage

National Semiconductor Corp. has added a new LED driver to its PowerWise family of energy-efficient products that features dynamic headroom control (DHC) to accurately drive current to two independently dimmable strings of LEDs.

The LM3492 ensures optimal system efficiency using the DHC feature, which dynamically adjusts the LED supply voltage. It has three embedded MOSFETs, a boost converter and a two-channel current regulator that drive two independently dimmable LED strings with a maximum power of 15W and an output voltage of up to 65V, and integrated fast slew rate current regulators for a contrast ratio of 1000:1, and a COMM pin that serves as a bi-directional input/output pin interfacing with an external MCU for command and diagnostic functions. The LED current is programmable from 50mA to 200mA by a single resistor.

The LM3492, which is ready for design on National's WEBENCH LED Designer, is available in a 20-pin thermally enhanced TSSOP package.
