PMC-Sierra has signed a licensing agreement with MIPS Technologies Inc. that would allow it to use the latter's MIPS32 processor cores in a wide range of applications in the communications, storage, printing, and embedded computing markets.

The MIPS32 cores covered by the agreement range from small-footprint cores to multi-threaded multicore solutions, from the 4KEm Pro, 24Kc Pro, 34Kc Pro, 74Kc and 1004Kc cores to the new MIPS32 M14K and M14Kc cores that execute the microMIPS instruction set architecture for an advanced level of code compression. The agreement also covers the MIPS SOC-it L2 Cache Controller.

PMC-Sierra, whose new high-performance maxRAID architecture uses three multi-threaded MIPS32 34K cores, said MIPS and its multi-threading technology "provides the high-performance, low power, and scalability needed for many storage and networking applications, together with a broad ecosystem of third-party support."
