The Apple iPad clearly ate into the market share of netbooks, also known as mini-notes, in the second quarter of 2010, according to DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch reported that sales of 10in netbooks fell 8 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, selling just 6.5 million in Q2 2010 compared to 7.1 million in the year-ago period. Among netbooks 8.9in or less, the drop was a whopping 89 percent with just around 100,000 sold. The iPad, on the other hand, sold 3.3 million units.

Some 9.8 million netbooks and iPads shipped in Q2 2010 for a 29 percent year-on-year increase. However, without the iPad, the netbook category would have experienced a 14-percent decline, DisplaySearch explained.

DisplaySearch expects netbooks and tablet PCs to continue to sell well, particularly in countries will low PC penetration. However, it predicted that the iPad and other tablet PCs that will debut soon to continue to eat into netbooks' market share. The study forecasts a 23 percent increase in netbook/tablet PC sales by 2011, and a 41 percent increase if the iPad is factored in.

DisplaySearch's study also includes figures and forecasts for other portable PCs, including 15in and desktop replacement laptops.
