Ontario Energy Minister Brad Duguid graced the opening of Enbridge Inc's newly expanded Sarnia solar project in the Canadian province with top officials of Enbridge and First Solar Inc. in attendance.

Enbridge spent nearly $300 million to expand the facility from 20MW of capacity to 80MW, making it the largest operating photovoltaic facility in the world. The company purchased the facility in the city of Sarnia from First Solar last year.

Some 1.3 million thin film solar modules manufactured by First Solar cover around 973,000 square metres, enough to produce electricity for some 12,800 homes.

Al Monaco, Enbridge executive vice president for major projects and green energy, and Frank De Rosa, First Solar's senior vice president for business development, accompanied Duguid on a tour of the sprawling facility after the opening ceremony.
